Southern’s men’s basketball team has not shown any improvement starting the season with not one win.
The Jaguars are just coming off an 88-44 loss against Texas A&M last week, causing their record to fall 0-4.
First-year head coach Rob Spivery said he didn’t know what to expect from his team before they played their first game.
“We have some work to do. We as coaches have to do a better job from a coaching aspect and making sure the players understand what we need to do on the floor. We need to get them to execute better defensively and offensively,” Spivery said.
The Jaguars lost against Texas 89-56 and Sacramento State 67-64 in the Guardian’s Classic, held in Austin.
Trying to prepare themselves for the match up against cross-town rival LSU was unsuccessful as they loss 84-56. Senior guard Chris Alexander led the Jaguars’ scoring with 13 points. Junior guard Deforrest Riley-Smith added 12. Senior guard/forward Alvin Mott finished with 8 points and five rebounds, to lead SU in rebounding.
“In the game of basketball, there are two areas where you really show toughness. That’s on defense and in rebounding,” Spivery said. “We didn’t show very much toughness out there and the difference in the boards showed that. They had as many offensive rebounds as we had total rebounds and that’s unacceptable. We have to get better and show more toughness than we showed.”
The team will now gear up for their first home exhibition game against non-NCAA Division I Jarvis Christian (0-2, 0-0). The game will be played in Seymour Gym at 7 p.m.
The Jaguars will be back on the road traveling to Ruston to take on the Bulldogs of Louisiana Tech on Saturday and back down south to Hammond to play Southeastern Louisiana.
