The Center for International Education will hold its annual International Week activities from Nov. 14-17. According to Barbara Carpenter, Ph.D., dean, the week was design to showcase Southern’s multicultural student demographic.
“We’ll highlight international education on the Baton Rouge campus,” Carpenter said. “On Nov. 16, the center will display different study abroad initiatives in the union and students will be able to sign up.”
Carpenter said students would have the opportunity to sign up for study abroad excursions to Mexico, Senegal and China. She said plans are also underway for the school to initiate a collaborative effort with the country of Belize for a study abroad program.
“The focus in Belize will be international service learning, as well as cultural diversity, given that the country’s (Belize) official language is English,” Carpenter said.
It is expected students will be given the opportunity to work with and learn about the different cultural ways of the indigenous people of Belize.
Students who have participated in the previous programs have visited Mexico, Darkar, The Gambia and China.
For more information on the program, contact Carpenter or Warner J. Anderson, Ph.D., study abroad coordinator in T.H. Harris Hall, Room 1100 or call (225) 771-2613. Students are also invited to find more information via the World Wide Web at www.subr.edu/internationaleducation.
