The Lady Jaguars will match up against Prairie View at Tomball Lanes on Nov. 4 in Tomball, Texas. The team is looking forward to having a better season; possessing what coach Karen Couvillion calls stronger members.
“Prairie View has been recruiting and have gotten stronger,” Couvillion said. “I think we will do okay. We should beat four of the five SWAC schools.”
Last Friday, the Lady Jaguars won their best three of five games against Louisiana Tech taking an NCAA point. Their first loss was by one pin in game three when they lost 171 to 172. They eventually finished the match with a win 156 to 136.
“We began slowly on a very dry shot. We rolled a 181 to Tech’s 158 and then our 168 to Tech’s 131, but we couldn’t close the match we lost in game three,” Couvillion said. “Overall they did a good job, but I know we can do better. They are a strong team.”
Southern went on to prepare for the Lady Indian Classic. On the first day, the Lady Jaguars won three of their five matches and defeated Louisiana Tech again, then Bethune Cookman and Minnesota State. Their only losses were to Vanderbilt University by 18 pins and North Carolina A&T a loss by just seven pins.
“We went in believing we were going to win and we did,” sophomore Melissa Bryant said. “We were okay we were down, but we stuck to together.”
On day two, the Lady Jaguars started out a little slow, losing to Arkansas State and Central Missouri, but in their rematch against Arkansas State, the Jaguars won. Bryant finished 10th in individual bowler’s scores with an average of 200 over seven games.
