The SouthernUniversity junior class hosted the Spring Fest talent show, “Capital CityIdol,” Tuesday night, with proceeds going to the Lacumba III project fund.
Contending fora $1,000 prize, 14 contestants sang and rapped to the audience’scontentment.
Power 94.8 FMdisc jockey Earl Alston hosted the event.
“I think it’sa great thing for our new SGA president to be making an effort for changebefore he even takes office,” said Alston of SGA president-elect JustinMcCorkle, who serves on the Lacumba III project committee.
Kellee Craig,Corey “Hankie” Dennard, Channing Donald and Jerry Jones judged the talent show.
Jeremy Wilson,the first contestant, sang a gospel song “Available to You.” Craig, one of thefour judges at the talent show said Wilson’s performance was good.
“I liked howyou incorporated a melody into the song, I think you did a good job.”
Lionel White,who sang “If Only for One Night,” also gained applause from the judges.
Between acts,DJ Earl stressed the importance of supporting Southern University.
“Bring yourmoney back to Southern, start supporting campus events and stop bringing yourcampus down. This is your home.”
Hip-Hop duoAnt and Slim rapped to their original song, “It’s Retarded.” Impressed withtheir talent, judge Donald said,”I think y’all have a future. Keep up the good work.”
Awing thecrowd with her rendition of Beyonce’s “Dangerously in Love,” Lakasha Stewartsilenced judges and had the audience backing her up.
“What can Isay?” asked Dennard after she was finished.
The winner ofthe night’s talent show was Lashonda Robertson, who sang Erykah Badu’s “NextLifetime.” A bass guitar, drums,keyboard, and three backup singers accompanied her.
“I am sothankful to God right now,” Robertson said. “But I also owe it to my band who Ijust called the night before — they are so wonderful!”
Jones askedRobertson if she was available for Spring Fest. Dennard told Robertson hervoice was a blessing from God.
“Southern Universityhas so much talent,” said Simmie Johnson Jr., junior business management majorfrom Bastrop. “We should have more events like this on campus.”
McCorkle,coordinator for the “Capital City Idol” show was elated with the show.
“I think itwas a success because the people that came out enjoyed themselves because theysaw quality talent,” McCorkle said.
Othercontestants included Demond Wilson, Krystal Parker, Reva, Tquela Wofford,Danyelle Adams, Lionel White, Raja Scrivens, Deonis Dillard, T’Sand and Bird,and Christopher Price.
