The SouthernUniversity men and women”s outdoor track team left Thursday for Houston tocompete at the Texas State University Relays. The T.S.U. Relays is scheduled through Saturday.
‘It will bea tough relay,’ said the Jaguars head coach Johnny Thomas. ‘It is tough because of the way theschedule is. We had so many highschool events mixed in and the kids have to sit out there so long. Competition is tough also butthat”s the toughest part. At thismeet we can see what we need to do for the rest of the season.
According toThomas, Southern will not run a lot of individual races because they are tryingto qualify in relays.
‘Between nowand SWAC (Southwestern Athletic Conference) time we have a lot of work to do,we”re going to need a lot of improvement,’ Thomas said.
On Tuesdaythe team was watching practice film on field events such as javelin throwing,the triple jump and long jump.
‘Frompractice sessions leaders have been emerging and we have had some progressmade,’ Thomas said.
On March10-12 the Jaguars competed in the Florida A&M Classic in Tallahassee,Fla. It was the Jaguars seasonopening meet.
‘It was a comingout party because this was our first outdoor meet this season,’ Thomassaid. ‘The most exciting thing tocome out of it was this four by four relay that we put together for the girls.Jackie Dix for outdoors did an excellent job. Erikka Thomas had her usual good meet and Monica (Robinson)did a good job.
Dix finishedfourth in the javelin throw — throwing for 35.63 meters and finished third inthe discus throw for 33.21 meters.
Robison wonthe long jump competion for a distance of 18″1/1/2″”. She also placed second in the high jump at 5″1/3/4″”feet.
The womencame in second place in the 4×100 meter relay with a time of 47.09. The men placed first in the 4×400 meterrelay at 3:16.99.
PamelaCockerham finished in third place with a time of 12.26 in the 100-meterdash.
BrianJohnson ran unattached in the 100-meter dash and finished second at 10.53.
In the100-meters hurdle event Kaisha Weeks won in 14.37 seconds. Weeks also placed second in the400-meter hurdles at 1:02.59.
JamieMclendon (unattached) finished in second place for the men”s 110-meter hurdlesat 14.41, and Eddie Larkins finished third at 14.79. Larkins also came in third place in the 400-meterhurdles at 54.90.
Charles Moon(unattached) won the men”s 1500-meter run at 4:08.93, while Erik Henneghanplaced fourth at 4:18.29.
The womenfinished second in the distance medley at 13:18.83, while the men finishedthird at 11:09.98.
