Judge YvetteAlexander believes that the law should be visible justice for everyone.
“I decided Iwanted to be a judge because I never wanted anyone to leave the court roomfeeling like the law didn’t work for them,” Alexander said in an addressdelivered to the Southern University Student body Tuesday.
She was apart of the SU Motivational Speakers Series Committee and the Association forWomen Students’ — sponsored “Women in Public Service” event.
Otherspeakers for the program included Attorney Beverly Robinson-Downs, SenatorSharon Weston Broome and Councilwoman Lorri Burgess.
A Gramblingnative, Judge Yvette Alexander received a Bachelor of Arts degree fromGrambling State University and a law degree from Louisiana State University.
Afterschool, she worked as counsel for the Louisiana State Legislature, theLouisiana State Senate, the East Baton Rouge Parish Public Defender’s Officeand was an Assistant Attorney General for the Louisiana Attorney General’sOffice.
From1988-1995, she served as Chief Legal Counsel for Secretary of State, FoxMcKeithen and served as an Ex-Officio Member of both the Louisiana State BondCommission, before being elected to Division “D” of City Court in 1995.
Alvin Woods,Student Government Association senior class president, shared his feelings ofappreciation to Judge Alexander as well as the other women who participated.
“Women inpublic service is an inspiration to women as well as males on campus,” Woodssaid to those in attendance.
