The Student Government Association of Southern University and A&M college has released a list of revisions made to the Student constitution.
Sent per email, the 9-page document lists a number of constitutional revisions and amendments made to the Southern University student constitution.
The e-mail, which was sent by SGA Vice-President Bre’Anna Perkins, reads, “the Amendments were made Sunday, November 6, 2016 in the Mocha Room of the Smith-Brown Memorial Student Union.”
Among the changes made by the Senate were amendments and revisions to Article I., Article II., Article III., and Article IV. of the constitution.
According to the rationale provided underneath each change, most corrected grammar or clarified the duties, responsibilities and requirements for elected office.
Article III. Election and Qualifications, contains the most revisions and amendments to the constitution.
Article III. Section 8 was amended to state that the winner of any given election will be determined by popular vote.
The accompanied rationale states that the revision was made because, “Students do not vote in high numbers of the second day of elections.”
Only in the event of a tie will a runoff election now be held.
The second revision, Article III. Section 11, Clause 1 was amended and requires that the top 4 positions of SGA; President, Vice-President, Miss Southern and Chief Justice, must have completed one full year of service in SGA (elected or appointed) in order to run for office.
The rationale supports this by saying, “Candidates having one year in an elected or appointed position will have a better understanding of the SGA. This will also put us in line with sister institutions.”
Attempts to reach out for comment from members of SGA were not immediately returned. (View Amendments here)
