Students and alumni went out for a night full of glitz, glamour, and elegance, as Jayden Johnson received her crown during the coronation ceremony. This year the Royal court has kept themselves busy and invested in the university by participating and hosting a number of events such as the Ida food relief drive, Campus clean up, and appearances at football games.
The theme for this year’s coronation was “timeless royalty captured”. The court looked stunning along with other guests that arrived on Jaydens behalf. Former Queens were acknowledged during the beginning of the ceremony. The court then begins to walk out starting with Miss freshmen, then making their way to Jayden. After receiving the crown Jayden partook in a dance with her father, and also had the opportunity to grace the crowd.
The Coronation is completely centered around Miss Southern permitting her to coordinate everything from the dresses, to the shoes, down to the theme.
Current doctors and alumni presented Jaden with gifts wishing her nothing but blessings on her Journey. Tayden Lee, a senior from SUNO says he makes the Coronation a priority each year. “My mom and dad are both alumni, one from the SUNO, and one from SUBR. The tradition of attending the coronation started for us 10 years ago. My mom always comes back to pay her respects, and this is one of her favorite events.”
Ray belton made a special appearance via video by congratulating Jayden for all she has accomplished. Shekana McCurity blew the crowd away with an amazing performance singing “I am a superwoman” by Alicia Keys. The Golden Blues also came out to perform choreography. Darby Smith, known as the 89th Miss Southern, says there’s a lot that goes on behind the scenes in dealing with the coronation. “This is actually my favorite part of homecoming week, but there’s so much behind the scenes that takes place for the coronation so I know how much Jayden has been going through in this week alone. Just to see her come out and present us with her grace and beauty is just beyond words.”
