The Southern University volleyball team traveled to Arkansas this past Sunday to take on the UAPB Lady Lions in a conference showdown. Already having dropped two SWAC matchups against Texas Southern, the Jags and Coach Jacobs looked to make up ground in the highly competitive Southwestern Athletic Conference.
The first set started out promising for the Jags as they took an early 3-0 lead but, quickly dissipated following an efficient regroup from UAPB. The Lady Lions out hustled the Jags for the rest of the set however as they turned their deficit to a 9-5 advantage. The Jaguars never recovered in the set as they fell 25-15 to go behind 1-0 on the match.
Freshman setter Kyla Carrier from Friendswood, Texas, and freshman outside hitter Elise Doomes led the charge for the Jaguars to start the second set, giving Southern another early lead of 6-2. Despite Southern leading the set 23-21, they allowed another UAPB rally to surrender four straight points, bringing the match count to 0-2 in favor of the Lady Lions.
Backs against the wall, Southern came out hot once again in the third set in an attempt to fight back against the resilient Lady Lions of UAPB. The Jags showed some resilience of their own however as they matched the Lady Lions blow for blow in the third set, ultimately claiming the third set 32-30.
Despite finally being able to claim a victory of their own in the third set, the Jaguars couldn’t catch lightning in a bottle again as the Lady Lions took off to a commanding lead and never looked back. The fourth set concluded with a score of 25-15 as the Jaguars lost the match 1-3 to the UAPB Lady Lions.
The Jaguars will look to find a rhythm in the coming weeks as they go on a month-long road trip that concludes on Halloween night as the Jaguars take on Alabama A&M University and Jackson State in Clifford Seymour Gym.
