Six elegant ladies of Southern took centerstage Monday night as the Alpha Sigma Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity held its annual “Miss Krimson and Kreme” pageant in the Smith-Brown Memorial Union’s Cotillion Ballroom.
The organization decided to breakaway from the normality of a formal pageant setting for “Kappa Week 2009: The Year of the Gentlemen”.
“Tonight, we’re having our Miss Krimson and Kreme Pagent, it is entitled Charm School; a twist off of the whole “I Love New York; Flavor Flav.” thing,” explained Damien Savage, a senior marketing major from Baton Rouge and chairman of the week’s events.
The pageant, titled “Nupe of Love,” featured six ladies competing for the love of “Mr. Nupe,” Benjamin Chappelle.
“It was a good experience sharing the spotlight,” said Brenton ‘BJ’ Love, senior criminal justice and sociology major from New Orleans. Brenton and “Miss Kremson and Kreme 2007,” Leilyn Briscoe, a senior child development major from Riverside, California introduced the ladies as they graced the stage for the first time.
In the first scene, Brittany Gix, Larrissa Griffin, Sam Guess, Candy Hadel, Kristen Miller and Mia Taylor were individually given nicknames based upon their personalities and their first impressions.
The second scene, “School Days,” allowed the women to express their oratorical skills as they discussed individual current topics that are relevant in our society.
After an energetic performance from the Baton Rouge Kappa League, the Kappa’s youth mentoring group, the swimsuit portion of the competition was underway.
The final, formal scene, gave the ladies a chance distinguish themselves from the other women by answering a final round of questions.
After the former Miss “Krimson and Kreme” took her final stroll down the aisle, her successor was announced.
“Holding the title was a wonderful experience, I mainly wanted to do it just to do something different. It was a good feeling, you know,” said Briscoe.
After Miller, a political science major from Kingston, Jamaica was announced by Love as Miss Congeniality, Mia Taylor was named first runner-up. After a brief pause in the ceremony, Love exclaimed: “This years Miss Krimson and Kreme” is… Kristen Miller!”
“It feels amazing, we put a lot of hard work into it, all the girls are really talented so it just feels really amazing that I won,” explained Miller.
