Grant Maxey scored 18 points to lead Jackson State in a 67-55 win over Southern University on Monday night.
Darrion Griffin added 15 points and Jeremy Caldwell had 11 for the Tigers (10-13, 9-2 Southwestern Athletic Conference), who won their fifth straight game. The Tigers have also won nine of their last 10 games overall after starting the season with 12 losses in 13 contests.
Chris Davis led the Jaguars (5-18, 5-6) with 26 points and Steffon Wiley chipped in with 10.
The Jaguars trailed by four points at halftime and stayed close throughout most of the second, pulling within 42-41 on Davis’ 3-pointer with 12:52 to play. But the Tigers closed the game on a 25-14 run from that point, sealing the win.
Jackson State outscored Southern 40-16 in the paint, and scored 20 points off 17 Jaguar turnovers.
Meanwhile, the SU women defeated J-State 43-40.
