Southern coach Rob Spivery calmly posed for pictures at midcourt with seniors Stephon Wiley, Chris Davis and Geri Guillory after SU’s women blasted Alcorn State 67-56 on Saturday inside the F.G. Clark Activity Center.
Spivery then made his way to the Alcorn sideline to shake hands with Braves coach Larry Smith before taking his seat on the bench, crossing his legs and reclining in his chair.
He was at ease.
As the first half drew to a close Spivery didn’t pace the sideline like usual, or make the short stroll to the end of the bench like he’s accustomed to.
Instead he appeared more relaxed than usual, almost as if he were at home.
To that credit he was dressed in an untucked SU team shirt and gold slacks, a far cry from his usual two piece suit and tie.
What does all this mean?
“It means that we had a comfortable win,” said Spivery. “We didn’t have to fight in the last 10 minutes of the game, and that’s relaxing.”
No kidding.
SU’s 90-61 win is by far team’s largest margin of victory all season.
After all it was senior night. And what better way could Davis end his career at SU than to score a game high 18 and lead the Jaguars to their widest margin of victory since defeating Jackson State 85-69 last season.
“He’s such a fluent basketball player and has a knack to score,” Spivery said of Davis. “It just seems to come a little easy for him.”
Davis also dished out a game high six assists, helping four other Jaguars reach double figures.
In all five Jaguars scored in double figures and junior Douglas Scott posted 13 points and 12 rebounds.
SU (8-20, 8-8 Southwestern Athletic Conference) shot a whopping 50 percent from the field while outscoring ASU 48-27 in the second half.
SUs bench also outscored ASU 27-10. The win gave SU back-to-back wins for only the second time this season.
“We had fun for a change,” Spivery said. “It wasn’t so stressful. Players weren’t so uptight.”
SUs women (14-10, 11-5) also got a relaxed victory, one which only saw one lead change, 49-48 with 7:49 seconds remaining in the second half.
And although SUs bench was outscored 35-13, the Jaguars torched ASU in the paint, outscoring the Braves 42-18.
Deidra Jackson led all scorers with 19 points, while Jamie Floyd finished with 16 points, 14 rebounds and two blocks. Kimberly Griffin also had nine points and 12 rebounds.
Both teams will wrap up their seasons with doubleheaders at Texas Southern on March 5 and Prairie View on March 7. Both women’s games will tip off at 5:30 p.m., with the men at 7:30 p.m.
