My fellow Jaguars,
It is my great pleasure and high privilege to welcome you to back to the yard! A lot of things are changing, but they are changing for the greater good! I hope most of you have seen the new website functioning by the new and improved Student Government Association. We designed the site to best fit the needs of the most important aspect of this University: the students!
In electing its next President, the student body faced a very tough decision this past April. For selecting me, I would like to thank everyone who had the courage to vote and believed in change. Second, to the administration, faculty, and staff: I look forward to working with all of you and making the necessary adjustments in order to better our Jaguar Nation. In keeping with my campaign slogan, now, more than ever, I am fully committed to moving our institution in the right direction.
My fellow students, I remind and encourage you to hold me accountable to staying fully committed to my platform, which has already been completed. As I promised in the debate, I have officially waived my right to the scholarship monies dedicated to the SGA President for the betterment of the student body. With the money I have given up, I have enacted the Textbook Assistance Program to help those students who are not able to afford their textbooks. Further, I have successfully negotiated with the University administration to implement “Concentrated Study Periods” (Dead Days) during finals week so that we can perform to the utmost of our scholastic ability. Lastly, I have entered into negotiations with community businesses to gain beneficial and much needed student identification card discounts. It pleases me to announce to you that we have won over the Subway nearest our campus, and now, The Table is Bread, located on Airline Highway, is our newest partner. These three initiatives round out the planks of my platform, and this day I give you my word to work to the best of my ability to finish the work necessary to accomplish these goals. Believe, without doubt, that my word will be kept.
Although we, together, have already accomplished much this year, last Friday, we achieved even more. In executing the vision that I have to restore our school spirit, the very FIRST ‘I Love SU Friday’ was held on the lawn of Washington Hall. On random Wednesdays throughout the year, ground signs announcing that there will be a mini-event on the following Friday, will appear. This past Friday, I, my staff, and the general student body partook in the festivities of space-walks and free snow-balls. As ‘I Love SU Fridays’ is our newest tradition, be on the look out for many, many more!
Jaguars enjoy the new school year and its new Student Government Association provided amenities! I felt that the improvements we have made are necessary to enhance us socially, better us academically, and empower us on the university level. I vow that I will continue to endeavor in Jaguar Pride through sincerity, unity, and dedication and I challenge each of you to do the same!Still moving in the right direction,
Carey L. H. Ash, PresidentStudent Government Association
