Southern’s Student Government Association has found it necessary to make more revisions to its constitution.
In a recent draft, members of SGA’s Constitution and Bylaws Revision Committee said limited capabilities would prevent them from “combating” the “preparation for Spring Fest, the Black Family Reunion, Black History Month activities, spring break, midterms and the Student Government Association elections.”
The draft also said the “countless Constitutional and Bylaw problems” within the constitution needed addressing this semester.
The committee has been working on the amendments since Oct. 18 and plan to have the changes made before the spring 2006 elections arrive.
It has also proposed a tentative three-week revision schedule, ending on Feb. 14, when the final roll call vote on the bill will take place.
Carey Ash, committee chair and sophomore class senator, said the changes are for a better student body.
“The changes focus on the purpose of the SGA,” Ash said. “We just don’t put on concerts, we represent out student body. Due to personal feelings, good or bad, the changes will be best for the student body.”
Proposed revisions include raising qualifying standards for elected officials, updating budget plans and revising impeachment proceedings.
The revisions will also ensure students a right to have a voice in the budget. Ash said the proposed changes will “dole out responsibility and ensure accountability.”
