A dismal first half could not stop senior guard Rolanda Monroe from scoring 28 points and getting seven rebounds in the Jaguars’ 69-64 win over Alabama A&M on Jan. 21.
“We were going to our strong suit, which is going to the block to Fred (Fredericka Lewis) and she wasn’t in form tonight, she wasn’t concentrating and she couldn’t get the ball to drop,” said Jaguars’ coach Sandy Pugh. “We got to get a rebound in that instance and I think we did a good job of that. I thought our offense was really stagnant, we weren’t getting the ball reversed at all and I thought that was a problem.”
Lady Bulldogs coach Altherias Warmley joined Pugh and agreed their teams were not playing up to its ability. The lead changed four times and the score was tied twice and during the Lady Bulldogs shooting slump, Southern (10-7 overall, 7-0 Southwestern Athletic Conference) had 10 steals but capitalized off only three points from fast breaks.
“We didn’t do a good job of blocking out. I thought we gave up too many offensive rebounds,” Warmley said. “I’m pretty much pleased with the defense there were a couple of times we let Rolanda get loose and she’s just the type of player that you can’t allow to have either shot, easy looks at the basket because she’s deadly.”
Junior guard Adrian Blake scored 11 points and 11 rebounds, while junior Tiffany Jones and senior Ashley Blake had nine points each for the Jaguars.
