After the Jags home and season opener against Southern Arkansas, Southern head coach Roger Cador said his team may be down after their 13-4 loss in the first game of their doubleheader and a 13-5 loss in their third, but they were not out, thanks to a 5-2 victory over the Muleriders.
“It wasn’t good,’ Cador said. “But even in this bad situation I’ve got to see a few bright spots.”
Cador said he wanted to play everyone to see where his players were starting the season.
“I saw Chris Barrett, who we really need. I thought Chris did extremely well, he pitched well and we need someone like him with experience.”
Southern and Southern Arkansas both finished with 12 hits a piece in the Jags 13-5 loss on Feb. 12.
Southern Arkansas (4-3) capitalized off nine walks and the pitching efforts of Drew Webster.
“Our left handed pitcher Drew Webster threw really well,” said Southern Arkansas coach. “He threw strikes to keep them off balance. Timely hits, and good base running, we took advantage of their errors. We were getting hits when we had runners on base.”
Southern made three errors, while Southern Arkansas recorded two.
After losing the first game 13-4 and winning 5-1 during the cold weekend, Cador said the temperatures Sunday evening were better than Saturday’s cold air.
Southern will travel to Thibodaux on Friday for a 6 p.m. for their next game against Nicholls State.
