Dictonary.com describes the term “couture” as the business of designing, making and selling highly fashionable, usually custom-made clothing for women. But for Carlton Morton and Tiffany King, creators of House of Couture Modeling Troupe, high fashion can start on college campuses.
King and Morton collaborated on the idea of creating a fashion-forward modeling troupe comprised of college students, and turned it into a campus organization.
“We are looking for three things in our models: their presence, walk and look in their eyes,” said King, freshman nursing major from Houston. “We don’t discriminate against size or race.”
Morton, a junior mass communication major from Opelousas, contacted King about creating a modeling troupe on campus.
“The main purpose of House of Couture is to display the true meaning of high fashion, class and quality to the students of Southern University and to give each student an appreciation for the art of fashion,” said Morton.
With most of the clothing being handmade, King and Morton want their uniqueness to reflect in the models as well as the clothes worn.
Currently, models for the House of Couture have to work for free, but within the next few years, King and Morton hope to expand into a paying enterprise that stretches farther than just Southern University.
“We just don’t want to put on fashion shows, we want to become an agency so we can send our models out for professional shoots,” King said.
The duo is currently looking for at least 20 new models and will hold auditions at 7 p.m. on Feb. 7 in Moore Hall Auditorium.
“Dress to impress,” Morton said, “Men need to wear pants and ladies will be required to walk in heels.”
