Elected officials of the Student Government Association 2006-2007 academic year were sworn in on Tuesday night in the Cotillion Ballroom of the Smith-Brown Memorial Union.
“I’m completely about business now,” said Niiobli Armah, SGA president elect, after being sworn in. “Southern University is headed toward a point where every single student, no matter where they are from, or their class, we will all be on the same page and that’s when the world is going to be watching. When we command that kind of attention that’s when it will be time for us to perform.”
The ceremony, which began at 7:30 that evening, featured remarks from various elected officials, past and present, awards presentations, a slide presentation reflecting the year by outgoing SGA Vice President Tiffany Johnson, the swearing in of officers by Lynn Dickerson, assistant vice chancellor for student affairs, remarks from the audience and a reception followed.
Newly elected Miss Southern Shekeila Sweazie said she was excited about next year and most of all she is looking forward to getting the “Up til Dawn” project started.
“It’s amazing,” Sweazie said. “I’m so excited for the year to come.”
Sweazie said she was appreciative of the help she has received from outgoing Miss Southern Sharika King.
“The transitioning is going very well,” Sweazie said. “With her (King) help and the help of my supporters I know I’ll be right in the place I need to be.”
The swearing in officially marked the beginning of the transition period into the new administration. Armah said the transitioning is coming along smoothly and he hopes to pick up where the previous administration has left off.
“I want to pick up where Justin left off and not just start where I want to start,” Armah said.
SGA President Emeritus Justin McCorkle said he was confident the incoming administration would have a successful year.
“Everything is going well,” McCorkle said. “The budget is already being prepared and I think next year is going to be great.”
