Southern University proved that winners are always on point as they swept the 47th Milburn-Davenport Pelican State Relays winning both the titles at A.W. Mumford Stadium and Roscoe J. Moore Track.
The Jaguars swept the 1,600-meter relays to close out the meet. It started with the women edging Grambling by one-hundredth of a second, winning in 3 minutes, 48.33 seconds. The Jaguars won the men’s 1,600 in 3:10.90, avenging an early-season loss to Southwestern Athletic Conference rival Prairie View.
“The meet was a success as far as I’m concerned,” said Johnny Thomas, SU head coach of the men and women’s track teams. “For us, this was what you call a finder’s meet.
Kaisha Weeks led the Southern women by winning the 100 hurdles in 14.70. Southern also won the 4x100m shuttle hurdles (1:03.27), 4x100m (45.77) and 4x200m (1:38.62) relays in addition to the 4x400m.
“You know what your top people can do. So we moved people around and tried different things,” Thomas said. “And we found two or three others who can help us. With the SWAC meet coming up in a couple of weeks that’s important.”
Eddie Larkins led SU’s men in winning the 400m hurdles in 52.95. Southern’s men took top honors in the 4x100m shuttle hurdles relay (1:03.03), the 4x200m relay (1:24.88) and the 4x400m relay.
