Southern University hammered the University of Arkansas Pine Bluff three times in two days to sweep the series 3-0.
The team beat UAPB 12-4 on Sunday and 5-1 and 11-3 Saturday at Lee-Hines Field. Half of the team’s 16 runs came with two outs.
“We’re beginning to put hits back to back, and that’s what we didn’t do earlier in the season,” said Southern head coach Roger Cador.
This time the damage was done without two starters – Gene Filyaw Jr. (hand) and outfielder Gerard Gause (arm) – out with injuries and their second best hitter, Mario Spann at .368, going hitless (0-for-2, one run).
“What we’re able to do is not just from the top of the lineup, but everywhere in the lineup, we have somebody who is knocking in runners,” Cador said. “That’s what you need. You can’t just depend on the top of the order to do it. At some point, everybody is going to have an opportunity and they have to do something, either start or rally or keep it going.”
The win Sunday was sparked by the clutch hitting of Darren Clark and Scott Williamson. Clark went 3-for-4 with four RBIs and three runs. Williamson went 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI.
Southern went on to blast UAPB (15-20, 9-12), which entered the series having won seven of its previous eight games by a 28-8 margin over the weekend.
“If we’re getting two-out production, that’s one of our main goals,” Cador said. “If you’re going to beat good teams, you have to do that with two outs or two strikes.”
SU (17-15 overall, 10-6 Southwestern Athletic Conference) trailed early in both games but never by more than one run. SU got both big and small hits in length in pulling away from the Golden Lions in the fourth inning of the second game.
