The Southern Lady Jaguars softball team, coming off a 3-1 game series last week against the Mississippi Valley State Devilettes, prepare to hit the road once again to take on the Lady Tigers of Texas Southern (6-25 overall, 3-9 Southwestern Athletic Conference) Friday and Saturday in Houston.
“We are beginning to look more like a championship team each day that we play,” said head coach Nancy Marshall. “Each team we face our level of competition increase in us as well as the team we play.”
The Lady Jaguars (14-16 overall, 7-5 SWAC) are 4-7 on the road, but are determine to maintain their conference standings with the championship in their eyes as they still have to face conference members Grambling State and Arkansas Pine-Bluff.
“We know right now what we have to do as a team,” Marshall said. “Our goal is not to lose anymore conference games. We can’t afford to drop anything, and we don’t want to drop anything.”
Southern is leading in team pitching standings in the conference, led by senior Jamila Taylor.
Taylor earned the SWAC pitcher of the week honors last week and received recognition for her performance this week.
She accumulated a record of 3-2 over the period with one save. She walked four and struck out 16 over six games.
She held opposing batters to a .186 averaging when she was on the mound.
“I can’t begin to say enough about her,” Marshall said. “Her pitching has been astronomical this year. She has done an awesome job on the mound. I think she should have gotten pitcher of the week and player of the week. That’s just the kind of player she is.”
Marshall stated that her team is doing what is expected as they prepare mentally and physically for each game gearing toward the championship.
“We’re champions,” Marshall said. “Each team we don’t take lightly, we are always ready. We look at ourselves as victors; we want to come out victorious.”
