It’s day three of the Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament and the Jaguars have sent the Lady Tigers of Grambling State and the Braves of Alcorn State packing. Although, both Alabama schools have the home advantage, their cheerleaders, bands and of course their fans were all in attendance.
Valley’s presence was even known, although both their teams lost in the quarterfinals. Their band, their cheerleaders, and how can I forget their deafening and energetic fans. The guy with the stick beating against the metal of the stands, trying to take away the focus from the players, but annoying the hell out of everyone else.
Valley located in Itta Bena, Miss. is about five hours from Birmingham, but still managed to come and show support for their team. For the first time ever, Southern men and women are number one in SWAC basketball and the men were crowned the regular season champs before the season ended, so what’s wrong with six hours? Basically, the Jaguars are dominant in the conference this year.
So, I ask again where are the fans (referring to the article printed in the Jan 27th issue of the DIGEST)? Where are the cheerleaders? Where is the Jukebox? Please don’t tell me everyone had midterms. It’s uncanny that the tournament occurred during midterm week, but it’s Friday.
The semi-finals are today. Our women defeated A&M this morning and our men will beat Jackson State this evening. All of the Jaguar Nation should be here to witness our teams’ move into the finals. It’s our year, it’s our time; it’s the JAGUARS! Well, I’m here, the DIGEST is here, the athletic director is here, and a small portion of the Nation is here. I hope to see the FULL NATION in attendance tomorrow in Birmingham. “Winner takes all”, back to Baton Rouge!
