“This is the first game we’ve had that I really felt we gelled as a team,” Southern coach Sandy Pugh said after the Southern University Women’s basketball defeated the Yellow Jackets of Georgia Tech, and claiming victory in the U.S. Cellular Classic Tournament hosted by East Carolina University.
The Jaguars came from a 26-19 halftime deficit to win over the Yellow Jackets 56-47.
Both teams got off to slow starts offensively, as they combined for only 19 field goals in the entire first half. With 6:25 left in the half the Jaguars held the lead at 15-9, before allowing Georgia Tech to go on a 17-4 run to end the half.
The second half saw Georgia Tech’s lead increase to 35-27, but they Jaguars worked their way back into the game, taking the lead with 8:07 left in the game. A layup by Angela Bullock placed the Jaguars ahead by one, score 44-43.
With 4:37 left to play and the score 49-47, the Jaguars held the Yellow Jackets scoreless to end the game. Final score Jaguars 56, Yellow Jackets 47. The Jaguars victory over Georgia Tech featured newcommer Angela Bullock, who posted a game-high of 19 on a fractured ankle and tournament Most Valuable Player Jackie Winfield who added 14 points. Winfield finished with 38 points for the entire tournament.
“I was looking more to get our team involved in the play,” Winfield said.
The Jaguars will host Tougaloo College before beginning Southwestern Athletic Conference play On December 15 at Texas Southern and Dec. 17 at Prairie View.
The Jaguars were voted preseason SWAC favorites to win the conference by the SWAC coaches and will host Grambling State on January 5 at 5:30 p.m., in its first home SWAC contest of the year.
