Jaguar women decimate Tougaloo 84-33

The Jaguar women’s basketball team decimated the ladies of Tougaloo College 84-33, Saturday, December 8, in the F.G. Activity Center, in its last tune up for Southwestern Athletic Conference play.
A starting line up featuring Jackie Winfield and Angela Bullock jumped on Tougaloo with a 31-2 run going into halftime with a 33-16 lead.
The second half saw much of the same as the Jaguars continued to maintain a substantial lead to the tune of 66-20. The Bulldogs of Tougaloo only managed one basket in the first eight minutes of the second half.
Although the Jaguars defeated the Bulldogs easily there were still signs that Jaguars have room to improve.
“The first squad in the second half, really came in, picked up the intensity, turned up the heat and played Division I basketball,” Southern coach Sandy Pugh said. “But they can still play better than what they did…Our intensity level has to be there the whole game—not just in spurts.”
Saturday night’s game was the ladies first home game after being on the road since the start of the season.
Jacklyn Winfield finished the contest with 16 points, while reserve Cherise Sims posted 14. Also making a showing for the Jaguars were Angela Bullock and Tremesha Colbert with 12 points each and Tammy Bullock and Tommie Walden with nine apiece. LaShandra Smith, who had 11 points, led Tougaloo.
The Jaguar defense forced 35 turnovers and 25 steals and at time made the Bulldogs.
Although Pugh was able to give her entire roster playing time, only four of the reserves scored. The bench excluding Sims’ 14 points only scored 12 points.
“Right now, I’m just concerned about my second squad,” Pugh said. “I really don’t think the second squad is up to the task yet. They have to execute better. Our execution was horrible tonight.”
The Jaguars will be in action Saturday, December 15 as they began Southwestern Athletic Conference play on the road against Texas Southern University at 5:30 p.m.
