The fans that assembled at A.W. Mumford Stadium last Saturday saw the Demons of Northwestern State University slip past the Jaguars 30-21.
The Demons jumped out to an early 7-0 lead with a one yard touchdown by tailback Troy Sumrall.
Just eleven seconds into the second quarter Devin Lewis gave SU its first score of the night, with a 79 yard touchdown. The score was tied at seven by successful kick by SU’s Francisco Villagrana.
The Jaguars jumped to a 14-7 lead with a one yard touchdown by senior fullback Antoneyo Williams . The Demons answered with eight yard touchdown by Sumrall.
After gaining possession on a blocked SU punt, NSU’s Deshun McNeely scored on a 69 yard pass from Craig Nall. The score Demons 28 Jaguars 14.
The Jaguars last score of the evening came at the end of the third quarter. Devin Lewis scored a second TD on a nine yard pass from Levy.
With a NSU team safety the game came to an end for the Southern University Jaguars, final score Demons 30 Jaguars 21.
“It was frustrating, we just weren’t executing offensively,” said SU coach Pete Richardson. “We had some opportunities and just couldn’t capitalize.”
NSU quarterback Craig Nall completed 21 of 36 passes , for 346 yards, one touchdown. Terrance Levy SU quarterback went 21 for 46 with three interceptions. He passed for 323 yards and 2 touchdowns.
SU’s Devin Lewis , senior wide receiver had a career high of 181 yards with two touchdowns.
Saturday night saw the Jaguars failed to put together a running game against NSU’s defense. SU encountered that same problem in last year’s 31-14 lost to NSU. Last season they rushed for 26 yards, this year Southern recorded a minus-18 yards.
“We’ve just got to get better,” SU offensive coordinator Mark Orlando said. “The kids got a chance to see what it’s all about. I hope they learned from their mistakes. It’s time to move on.”
