Seven of the of the South’s biggest names in rap and R& B came together Friday night, August 31, 2001, to benefit the Southern University Alumni Federation at the Baton Rouge Centroplex Arena.
Rap artist Mystikal, aided by Atlanta’s Ludacris headed the list of artists, which included Juvenile, Jaheim and Kane and Abel.
The concert was sponsored by T.E.S. Entertainment and Mystikal’s new label Big Truck Records. It was open to the public with discounts given to college student s with I.D.
Mystikal, whose real name is Micheal Tyler, made a cameo appearance at last year’s Battle of the Bands with the Southern University Marching Band. He stated that this concert was showing no particular favoritism towards Southern.
“After high school I went straight into the Military, so I support Southern and Grambling equally,” said Tyler.
Over 3,000 people were in attendance. At the end of the night T.E.S. Entertainment and Big Truck Records presented a donation of 10 percent of the net $1,200 dollars, to Cedric Upshaw of the S.U.A.F. to go to student scholarships.
“The concert turned out to be a positive event and there was no problems to speak of,” said Tevester Scott of T.E.S. Entertainment.
Scott is an Alumni of Southern University and A and M College in Baton Rouge, La and former business manager for No Limit Records.
Other artists who performed at the concert included, Fifth Ward Weebie, Chopperz and Manny Bigalow.
“We plan on doing more events with the Alumni in the future,” said Scott.
The next collaboration will be an old school concert.
Also in attendance at the concert were the Navy and Army ROTC from Southern University. Both groups served as concert security free of charge.
