The Southern University men and women golf teams are ready to take big steps in the upcoming season.
With the women’s team finishing second and the men’s coming in fifth in the South Western Athletic Conference last season the team morale is very high in anticipation of the start of the season.
“We will give a good run for the SWAC championship,” said Willie Williams the men and women’s head coach.
Leading the women team is Cassie Jemison the women individual defending SWAC champion. “I feel very confident with my chances to defend the SWAC title,” said Jemison.
Figuring to head up the men attack is Rashard Wilson who has completely recovered from a broken hand which sidelined him for most the season.
” I have regained my swing and I’m looking forward to a great season,” said Wilson. “We have a lot to look forward to.”
The team will have a young nucleus that will be guided by its two seniors: Stevan Hartford Jr. and Chantelle Richardson.
“I believe that this team will do better than we fared last season because everyone seems to be focused on winning and that’s a good thing,” said Hartford.
Returning to the men’s team along with Hartford is Wilson and Brian Njoroge. The newcomers include freshmen Tarik Asim-Ali, Bryan Arnold, a transfer from Bossier Parish Community College and David Patterson. Peter Ndungu a transfer who according to coach Williams is one to watch out for this season.
Teaming with Richardson on the women’s side is Jemison, Alfreda Davis, Therese Johnson, Tyra Reasonover and Danielle Sello.
With the mix of old and new coach Williams feels that a championship may be well within reach for the Jaguars.
“We will be trying to win the SWAC and advanced to the NCAA tournament,” exclaimed Williams. “We have mature leaders and young players who show great potential.”</</p>
