Well, well, well…Jaguar Nation, here we are once again, face to face. Well, actually, paper to face, but you know what I mean.
Welcome! Incoming freshman, outgoing seniors, faculty, staff, alumni, and all of you in between, welcome back to the Yard. Who knows what this semester may bring.
I can tell you what the DIGEST will bring, however. As Editor-in-Chief, I’ve made a few changes, amendments, modifications, alterations…you know, performed a little plastic surgery, geared towards not only enhancing awareness on campus, but also making your voice a little louder, thus encouraging overall growth and improvement.
You see, I want to make this more of a people’s paper. Don’t get me wrong, the paper was pretty good last year—we won six awards—but there’s always room for improvement. There are a lot of everyday people who do outstanding things and it never gets mentioned in the paper. I’m trying to change that. I want to see more of the norm that ‘s not so normal, the people who don’t necessarily belong to an organization or play a sport, but are still making a difference in their lives and others.
I also want to expand coverage. Life does exist beyond this campus, and as a newspaper, it’s our duty to report that. You’ll see a little more of what you’d see in a metro publication. The world’s too small not to have a piece of it in our paper.
At first glance you can see the appearance has been modified a great deal for a more attractive, interesting looking paper. That’s just the tip of the iceberg. Sections have also been added to the paper: Business/Health, State and Nation, and National Sports, to name a few.
I also made a special little section for those of you who are very outspoken, but seldom heard: Speak Out Shorts. When I was photo editor last year, people always had valid points that I wanted to put in the paper, but it was never the Speak Out Question. Now you can submit your comments regardless of what the question is, and they could get printed, only without the picture.
Our DIGEST staff is made up of mostly newcomers. Bright, hungry journalists—though all not journalism majors—who’ve so far hit the ground running and tackled every task I’ve thrown at them. I’m sure you’ll appreciate them as much as I do.
I’ve got a few other surprises in store for you guys, but you’ll just have to keep picking up the paper to see what they are. Enjoy!
