After a losing season and a change at the coaching position the young Southern Jaguar basketball team is looking to make big strides in the Southwestern Athletic Conference.
The Jaguars, who finished last season with a 11-16 overall record, 8-10 in the SWAC, will return to regular season action on November 19 against the Tigers of Louisiana State University.
Ben Jobe is returning to take over as head coach of the Southern Jaguars replacing the fired Tommy Green. Jobe, 68, was out of coaching game last season and last coached at SU in 1996 when he left to assume the head coaching job at Tuskegee University.
Jobe inherited a relatively young team returning one starter from last year and having to deal with a team consisting of eight freshmen.
Brian Johnson, junior swingman from Iowa, is the lone returning starter for Jobe and is expected along with Victor Tarver and Deandre Bell to be the leaders of this young squad.
“I feel that I’m coming back to a good situation and to a system where I feel comfortable running, it’s like I got a brand new start,” said Tarver.
“Even though we have a young team we will surprise a lot of people this year, we will be a better team than last year,” said Johnson.
“This is probably the youngest team in the conference, they will have to learn while they play which will only make them a better player,” commented Jobe.
Jobe who is mostly known for his “run and gun” style of play says that the team should not have any problem adjusting to the new system.
“I expect 93 shots in every game,” said Jobe.
The Jaguars’ gets kicked-off with an exhibition game against the V.A.S.D.A. AAU at 7 p.m. in Seymour Gym, November 7.
