Saturday October 6 was homecoming for Southern University but a day of strange events for residents of Ollie Butler Moore Hall.
At 11:30 a resident of the dorm was pushed through the window of his dorm room during a fight with his roommate.
According to Betty Adams, Head Resident Moore Hall, the students started playing around and things took a serious turn when one roommate grabbed a bat and his roommate reacted by pushing him out of the window. The student suffered cuts on his head and one on his upper left arm.
Campus police and the EMS were immediately contacted and responded rapidly to rush the victim to the hospital.
“The EMS did a great job reporting to the scene they were here quickly,” said Adams.
The student who pushed his roommate was handcuffed by campus police and escorted to jail according to Adams.
A few hours later the dormitory was threatened with an electrical fire.
According to Adams she was in her office when a residential assistant warned her of the fire.
“All I remember is that someone pulled the fire alarm and as I was going upstairs to check on the situation another RA got the fire extinguisher and I helped clear people from the building,”said RA Philip Salaam a sophomore from Urbana, Ill.
“My immediate reaction was to evacuate the building and make sure everyone knew to get out,” said Adams.
Apparently a resident was drying clothes on the second floor when a faulty plug caused the fire.
“I think it was a poor excuse for the university to leave these old machines in here and replace the ones on the third floor. It was like they were asking for something to happen,” said Landon Ward a senior Physical Education major from Jeanerette.
“I was concerned about the safety of the residents and I wanted to make sure everything was completely safe for students to enter the building,” said Adams.
