The Junior Class along with the Beta Sigma Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Incorporated exerted themselves in a positive way by raising for the victims of the recent attacks on our nation.
On September 16, 2001, at the AIDS Forum, the Junior Class asked for donations for the United Way September 11th Disaster Relief Fund.
“I believe that the students gave from their hearts,” said Junior Class Senator Shamelda Pete, an accounting major from Breaux Bridge.
“The junior class was very supportive and persistent,” she added.
Aside from taking donations at the AIDS forum on September 16, 2001, the junior class also collected money at the AWS and Men’s Federation Pageant on September 20, 2001.
“When I got to six hundred dollars, I stopped counting,” stated Pete.
The brothers of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Incorporated, who has won the Chapter of the Year Award, and Superior Community Service of the Year Award, felt good helping others in their time of need.
“It seemed like 60% of students cared and 40% either did not care or had a nonchalant attitude about the situation,” says Timothy Hale, secondary education major, from Mobile Alabama.
“I do think they gave from their hearts but, some gave because they were asked more than once about it,” he added.
“There was a lot of support from the Omega’s. We gave generously too.” He also added. The Beta Sigma Chapter raised over six hundred dollars.
Both groups proudly wore American Red Cross t-shirts and carried milk containers while asking students for their spare change. They also told the students to consider the fact that it could have been their families.
