After a two-week break following a devastating loss to Jackson State University, the Southern Jaguars were ready to not only play, but also play to win.
And win is what they did against the Delta Devils of Mississippi Valley State University. Redemption was the name of the game as the Jaguars defeated the Delta Devils 49-0, in the First Port City Classic.
“We needed to bounce back,” said Josh Davis, a Shreveport native. “I can’t stress that enough.”
The bounce back started when freshman Carl Singleton leaped into the endzone for a three-yard touchdown, with 12:24 remaining in the first quarter.
Quarterback Terrence Levy put the next two scores on the board with four and seven -yard touchdowns in the second quarter, score at halftime Jaguars 21, Delta Devils 0.
The second half opened with a Levy touchdown, off a quarterback sneak, after a Codie Smith-Robinson interception, on the first play.
Levy’s touchdown was followed by a 65-yard touchdown by Devin Lewis.
Singleton had his second touchdown of the time night, late in the third quarter, bringing the score to 42-0 Jaguar lead.
With 4:44 left in the game Antoneyo Williams scored on a three-yard run, for the final score of the game.
Final score Southern 49, Mississippi Valley 0.
There were several standout players in last Saturday’s game. Before leaving the game due to a sprained knee, SU quarterback Terrence Levy went 20-20 for 213 yards.
“Terrence was perfect,” Devin Lewis said. “He looked real comfortable.”
Freshman Carl Singleton had his best game of the season, with 140 yards and two touchdowns, on 32 carries.
“Carl is running hard. As long as we can run the football, it keeps the pressure off our passing game,” Richardson said.
Singleton was also proud of his accomplishments. Singleton, in five games including two starts has accumulated 383 yards.
“There were great field and weather conditions today and my O-line and receivers did a good job blocking for me,” Singleton said. “I really wanted the ball so I can show my talent and do what I do.”
The Jaguars who are now 4-3 on the season and 3-1 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play, will face non-conference rival Florida A&M, in Tallahassee this weekend at 4p.m.
