In a battle to the finish before a crowd of 19,388 fans, the Southern University Jaguars ousted the Texas Southern University Tigers 7-6 in Houston’s Reliant Astrodome.
Still the momentum is with the Jaguars as they prepare for the Prairie View A&M University’s Panthers Saturday, November 17 at A. W. Mumford Stadium at 3 p.m. The Jaguars move to 6-3 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference standings and 8-1 overall, thanks to a wide-right field goal attempt from the 40-yard line Tiger kicker Vince Patrick.
Second only to Grambling in the SWAC Eastern Division the Jags are in a must-win situation if they plan to participate in the SWAC Championships.
Last week, Prairie View lost to Jackson State in Prairie View Texas 38-20. Although Prairie View is 2-4 in the conference and 3-6 overall, Coach Pete Richardson knows that he cannot take this game lightly, especially with all of the injuries that the team has sustained. “They’re a vastly improved football team. They’re moving the ball offensively…” stated Richardson. The Panthers are moving the ball offensively, even though they average a paltry 85 yards per game this season; but they have hope in their WR Deontay Wilson with his 714 yards receiving and his 1010 all-purpose yards.
When the Panthers bring their offense, Southern will have to counter with their SWAC leading defense. Expect linebacker Robert Chapman to demonstrate to the Jaguar Nation why he has earned the honors of being the SWAC Defensive Player of the Week. His one sack and his 11 tackles (including seven for minus 33-yards) against Texas Southern was a contributing factor. Also, linebackers Chris Cooper and Shannon Smith will become key players in Saturday’s game.
Crucial will be the presence of left offensive tackle Gary Jenkins. Jenkins suffered a pinched nerve in the game against Texas Southern, but it is likely he will play.
Seven starters will be out of the game Saturday due to injuries, but nonetheless, a win is still expected. “We just want to get out of Saturday without anymore injuries. That’s the whole key for us now.”
