Last Wednesday, October 31 the Southern University Police & Traffic departments hosted a forum to voice opinions about current parking situations and ticket discrepancies here on campus.
However ,the turnout of only 26 people was small,, the point was made that students were unhappy about unfair ticketing and parking on campus.
Several points were made at the discussion that started at 7:30p.m. in the Union Ballroom and several solutions have made progress in less than a week’s time.
“Parking fines won’t be accumulated on students’ records from past years, only for this current semester,” said Kevin N. Johnson, Deputy Administrator for the Southern University Police Department.
Many students complained that they were being charged for tickets they paid for, courtesy from officers, lighting, and the checkpoint located in the back of campus.
“I encourage students to use JagNet to access information on holds their student’s account that may prevent them from graduating, ” Johnson added.
Here is a preliminary update of some of the points at last Wednesday’s forum:
Lighting
Requests have been submitted to the physical plant to improve lighting in selected and high traffic area.
Checkpoint
Mandate order for officers to be more “vigilant” at checkpoints.
Courtesy
Supervisors have been instructed to reaffirm courtesy with collegiate body.
The department in also in the process of implementing a “Night Shuttle” that will work like a taxi. The shuttle will have a radio that students can call in and request to be picked up from one point and taken to another.
The shuttle will operate after 5 p.m. And it is projected that it will be up and running before the close of the fall semester
