A four-year losing streak is finally broken. The Jaguars defeated FAMU 17-14, all thanks going to Francisco Villagrana.
People often ask me why am I such a Villagrana fan? It is simply because, sometimes I can see the nervousness in his eyes and feel it in his movements, when he prepares for a punt or a kick.
Kickers, quarterbacks, and wide receivers are the most targeted positions in football: If a team loses a game, someone is bound to say;
“If the quarterback had made a better pass, or if the receiver had caught the ball in the endzone, or if the kicker would have made that extra point attempt we would have won.”
And that was exactly the case Saturday. When Villagrana made that kick, tears almost came to my eyes. Watching him be embraced by his teammates was moving. I was happy our team won, but I was happier because Francisco won. It did my heart good to see him (Villagrana) wipe the smirk off the face of a very cocky FAMU player named Sequin Dowe (no. 41). Dowe had been taunting the Jaguars all night. As he ran off the field after FAMU’s very unsuccessful field goal attempt, he pointed towards Francisco and laughed openly. The cheers of the Jaguar Nation quickly silenced his laughter, as they stormed the field, celebrating a Jaguar win, made possible by Francisco Villagrana.
FAMU was so stunned by the loss that, they turned on their sprinklers in order to remove the Jaguar Nation from the field. They were disgusted because a team beat them who “was not supposed to beat us,” said FAMU QB.
Francisco made that possible.
Yes, our team played decent defense for the majority of the game, but it was the quiet-spoken, sole kicker of the team, who kept Florida A&M from achieving their goal of 500 victories. In addition, I say congratulations Jaguars, congratulations Frankie!
Now on to another less happy topic. For what reason did the field personnel at FAMU, turn on the sprinklers roughly five minutes after the game. I can almost guarantee that if the final score would have been different and in the Rattlers favor, those sprinklers would not have came on until the FAMU fans decided they were ready to vacate the field.
I feel we as a student body need to ask for an apology regarding this very un-sportsmanlike behavior. It was rude and a great disrespect towards the Southern University, a fellow Historically Black University. Yes, I am sure they were disgusted by the loss, but being upset has never been and never will be an excuse to be disrespectful. Florida A&M University owes the Jaguar Nation an apology, an apology I demand that we receive.
