On November 20, Administrative Assistant “Coach” Fernandez Griffin and the Southern University Jaguar Football Team expect to deliver “baskets” of holiday cheer to local families in need.
It’s holiday season again and Griffin is once again spearheading the football team’s campaign to help the needy.
The Southern University’s Football Team Food Drive is in its ninth year, and with the help of the S.U. community, there is no reason why this year should not be a grand success.
Through local agencies, churches, and word of mouth, the drive has helped satisfy holiday appetites of those in need. Back in 1993, the project started with only three foodbaskets to be given out to three needy families. Last year, over 100 baskets were made, and this year projected 110-115 baskets are expected.
This year, along with the football team, every sport in the athletic department will be responsible for five food baskets. But Coach Griffin expects the entire Southern family to help out as he mentioned that “…all sports in the department will participate, but we need the effort of everyone in the SU family…from administration to custodians.”
Those willing to help out can do so by bringing all non-perishable items to F.G. Clark Activity Center, room A-102. There will also be receptacles at various locations on campus.
The Jaguar Nation can help out by donating one or more can good at the Southern-Prairie View game to be held November 17. Food barrels will be located at all gates.
Selected families will meet at F.G. Clark Activity Center at 6 p.m. on November 20 to receive their food baskets.
If you know anyone in need of a food basket, feel free to contact Coach Griffin at 771-3175. The name, address, phone number, and number of family members will be needed when recommending a family.
Coach Griffin stated “We have a fundamental duty to help those in need in our community. We have a lot and we waste a lot. We need to give to those who don’t have that luxury.”
