The Muslim religion has often been overshadowed by stereotypes and misrepresentations.
Although Muslims are commonly seen selling items, or worshipping in mosques, the naked eye has to look pass these images in order to get a scope of their fervant convictions.
One student at SU associates this “peace-promoting” sect as being, “a cult that follows only one view of things.”
Osama bin Laden’s Muslim beliefs and hatred toward Americans has not exactly persuaded others of the goodness of this religion.
There are three branches of Islam; the Sunni Muslims, Shi’ite Muslims, and the Nation of Islam, all of which practice different interpretations of the Quran.
The mission, as believed by Dr. Washington, Assistant Professor of Economics, is “… to get society on board to obedience to God’s will, the same as Christianity and even Judaism.”
According to Serving in Missions International, there are five beliefs of the Muslim faith:
(1) Belief in God: One God, who is without an equal, who created and maintains the world.
(2) Belief in Angels: Angels are considered the servants of God, through whom He reveals His will.
(3) Belief in the Prophets: Muslims believe Muhammad to be the final and greatest prophet of God. Other highly esteemed prophets include Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, and Jesus.
(4) Belief in the Holy Books: The Quran is the holiest book of Islam. Muslims also recognize the Law of Moses, the Psalms of David, and the Gospel of Jesus, but usually consider them abrogated or corrupted.
(5) Belief in the Day of Judgement: Is a day when each person’s good and bad deeds will be weighted, to determine an eternal destination.
“This religion has always been misunderstood. Prior to[Africans] being brought to America, many slaves were Muslim. Now, 400 years later, the European version of the Muslim religion exists. We have been conditioned to reject it,” said Washington.
