NEW ORLEANS (AP)—A report finds that Louisiana ranks fifth in a disturbing category: the rate of women murdered by men.
An annual study by The Violence Policy Center, a nonprofit group in Washington, D.C., analyzed FBI homicide statistics for 2006, the most recent available. Researchers found that murders involving one female victim and one male offender took place at a rate of 1.97 slayings for every 100,000 residents in the state.
Nevada was first, with a rate of 3.27; followed by South Carolina, 2.84; Alabama, 2.2 and Oklahoma, 2.1.
Nationwide, 1,836 women were murdered by males in single-victim, single-offender incidents in 2006, according to the report. The study was released Thursday to coincide with Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October.
