Southern University held its 2008 homecoming concert last night in the F.G. Clark Activity Center.
Performing artist included soul singer Chrisette Michele, R&B star Trey Songz and rap superstar Plies.
“I look forward to it and it gets better and better every year,” said sophomore criminal justice major from Shreveport Jagmon Foster.
Def Jam recording artist Chrisette Michele kicked off the concert with singing “Be OK” and “If I Had My Way” from her album I Am.
Michele also debuted her new single “War Cry” which featured rapper and younger brother Lem “LP” Payne.
When it came to performing for Southern students, Michele said that she felt good to perform for black students.
“It’s really inspiring to see people with my face,” said Michele, who graduated last spring from Five Towns College in Long Island, NY with a major in vocal jazz performance.
Currently, Michele said that she is hanging out in the studio with artist like R&B singer Robin Thick, working on her sophomore album Like a Lady and establishing an acting career as well.
Atlantic/Songbook records recording artist Tremaine Aldon Neverson or better known by his stage name as Trey Songz, performed his hits “Gotta Make It,” “Gotta Go” and “Can’t Help But Wait.”
Songz, who performed at Southern in 2005 during the beginning of his career said it the students “always showed me a lot of love.”
As of now, Songz is working on his third album that is slated for a release early next year and beginning an acting career that includes a Gap commercial plus a few movie roles.
Headliner for the night was Atlantic/Slip-n-Slide records rapper Plies, who performed hits “Bust It Baby (Part 2),” “Shawty” and “Please Excuse My Hands.”
In a surprise move, Plies brought Baton Rouge’s own Lil’ Boosie to perform on stage with him.
Student Government Association Activities Coordinator Elyse McFadden said that the reason for the artist choice was to give something to everyone.
“I think this concert was well diverse and we even got a local artist,” said McFadden.
Tommy Hilliard, a senior special education major from Baton Rouge said that the concert got him hyped for the upcoming homecoming game against Texas Southern University Saturday.
“It was nice to see artist like Plies and Trey Songz,” said Hilliard.
