After first hearing the lineup for this year’s homecoming concert, which included Chrisette Michele, Trey Songz and Plies, expectations were low mainly due to the female orientated artist selections.
The first act was Chrisette Michelle. After hearing one or two of Michele’s songs on the radio prior to her performance, it was expected to be lackluster. Chrisette Michele just was not the best choice for a performance at the homecoming concert.
Her voice has a rasp to it that sounds as though it is geared more for a more intimate venue like a small night club; definitely not an arena filled with thousands of over-excited colleges co-eds who only moments ago were listening to DJ Supa Mike play “Bounce” and “Jigg” music for a half hour before she took the stage. Overall Michele’s performances are best performed on the radio.
Trey Songz’s performance can be referred to as “Usheresque,” and that can be defined as it was pretty much the usual R&B crooner performance that was filled with typical show stereotypes, which included taking off every t-shirt he had on and throwing them into the crowd until he was shirtless, gyrating against the air and making references to what would happen if he were in bed with any of the female audience members. Songz’s performance was filled with the usual antics of treating the crowd to his own remixed versions of songs from other popular artists, such as T.I. and T-Pain, while attempting to add some variety to his show. He left the stage with a thoroughly entertaining, yet unsurprising performance.
Headliner Plies was an act that had a lot of high expectations after watching Michele and Songz perform. Whatever Plies would do on stage would be a welcomed change.
One of the major reasons people attend concerts is for the atmosphere that is created and what Plies created was great for those in attendance. Although some of the songs he performed were familiar, when he performed the unfamiliar ones, the excitement he projected on stage made the audience eager to listen to them.
Plies’ performance became somewhat stagnant and reminiscent of the stereotypical rap concert, but at that point Plies surprised the audience by bringing out Baton Rouge’s own Lil’ Boosie, who reignited the excitement.
Overall, Plies is a good performer and supplied a good live show. If someone is given the opportunity to go to one like last night’s performance; then they should definitely go—especially if it’s free.
This year’s homecoming concert was entertaining.
Those who did not attend missed out on a good show. A lot could be learned about the artists that performed : Chrissete Michele doesn’t need to perform for an audience of more than 10, Trey Songz could probably be in the Guinness Book of World Records for most shirts worn at one time and that Plies can be the headliner of a concert.
