MOBILE, Ala.—Last week Southern defeated Alabama State 15-0 in Ladd-Peebles Stadium. The win was good for SU’s first shutout since 2005.
The SU defense intercepted four passes and guided senior linebacker Jonathan Malveaux to the end zone as he scored the games’ only touchdown, a 15-yard interception returned off ASU quarterback Brandon Dowdell.
“I was just reading the quarterback,” Malveaux said. “I saw a hand up and reacted as the ball came toward me, then I picked it off.”
Josh Duran converted on three field goals, giving SU a 9-0 lead before Malveaux put the game out of reach with his interception.
“I just wanted to make all my kicks and help my team to victory,” Duran said. “I knew I needed to nail those to put points on the board.”
Added Glenn Bell, “Josh works hard through the week. He’s one of the most consistent guys we have.”
Malveaux won the games’ defensive MVP and Duran took offensive MVP.
“I know what Malveaux can do,” Bell said. “He has great ability, anytime he’s on the field he’s going to make plays.”
