Southern’s bowling team won the 2008 Southwestern Athletic Conference Western Division round-up held at Don Carter Bowling Center this past weekend, capturing its second SWAC Western Division round-up.
“The ladies played exceptionally well all weekend,” said coach Karen Couvillon. “We lost one game to Jackson State but I wasn’t upset because the team needs to understand we can’t win them all. We might be the SWAC champs but we still can lose if we don’t play our game.
SU finished the three day weekend with 11,785 pins and a 12-1 record. Alabama A&M University finished second with 11,747 pins and an 11-2 record. Louisiana Tech finished the weekend with 11,130 pins and a 10-3 record.
Jackson State’s Ashley Blakley finished the event with the best average as she bowled a 197.6 over 13 games. In game 12, Blakely finished with a 247 — her third game of the weekend with at least a score of 230 or better.
SU’s Cassandra Shivers finished with a 194.7 average while Alabama A&M’s Melanie DeCarlo was third with a 193.3 average. Texas Southern had two players to round out the top five – Chantel Jefferson (189.15) and Ciara Watts (187.64). SU now sits atop the SWAC Western Division in the with a perfect 5-0 record.
The order of finish is as follows: 1. Southern, 2. Alabama A&M, 3. Louisiana Tech, 4. Texas Southern, 5. Prairie View, 6. Jackson State, 7. Grambling State, 8. Alabama State, 9. Mississippi Valley State, 10. Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
