The Associated for Women Students hosted a jazz brunch in the Lakefront Room of the Smith-Brown Memorial Union Wednesday for its members.
“Basically, the jazz brunch is a mixer for the women on campus to give them more knowledge of the upcoming events such as the speaking engagement we will be hosting next Wednesday; we are also promoting AWS Week that will be in January,” said AWS president Aleice Allen, a senior accounting and marketing major from Houston.
Southern University’s Jazz Band played musical selections throughout the event.
Junior biology major and Baton Rouge native Jentoria Anderson sung Erkyah Badu’s “On and On,” that brought the attendees more at ease while enjoying their brunch.
“I think that getting the talent that’s here on Southern’s campus is better than getting others from off campus,” said Allen.
Since there are more events to come from AWS this semester, Executive Assistant Ronisha Johnson, a junior and social work major from Baton Rouge, believes that the jazz brunch was just the beginning.
“I feel like the Jazz Brunch is a great introduction to the women at SU. This event turned out to be trendy, really into the 21st century, and chic.”
Some of the women students who attended the jazz brunch are very familiar other events AWS has put on in the past, and were excited to see more.
“I usual attend the association for women students events,” said Kenya Warren, sophomore biology major from New Orleans. “They are very nice, especially this one. It is a very nice introduction to the beginning of the new events to come.”
Charisse Gibson, junior mass communication major from New Orleans attended the jazz brunch and would like to see more women attend more AWS events.
“I feel that this is a pleasant experience that we need to have more often, it’s in a great setting, it should have been publicized more; AWS has always had events that have been very good. I do feel the participation should have been a lot more people.”
Math lab coordinator and advisor for AWS, Jessie Fosterthought the turnout for the event was good.
“This was great, I was very surprised with how it turned out, the music is soft and the setting was set it up just right. I think that it’s great that the students are able to come together to mingle and to come out to support AWS. I believe that other organizations that are on campus should have more events like this because it gives everyone to relax and enjoy.”
