Presidential primary nominees Democrat Sen. Barack Obama and Republican Mike Huckabee won their respective primaries in Louisiana last Saturday.
According to reports, black voters in Louisiana made up 45 percent of the state’s Democratic votes that seemed to support Obama.
“I voted for Barack because of his message of change,” said senior criminal justice major from New Orleans Ferdinand Dorsey.
Clinton’s lack of investment in Louisiana with husband Bill making a few appearances for his wife while Obama spoke in New Orleans could have been a reason for her defeat in the pelican state according to Assistant Professor of political science Albert Samuels.
“Obama has a lot of momentum currently,” said Samuels. “The Clintons aren’t going away anytime soon.”
Students on Southern University’s campus like Christina Lucas, a freshmen nursing major from Baton Rouge, sided with the Clinton camp because of issues.
“I voted for Hillary because though Obama is black, I feel that she can better handle the issues,” said Lucas.
According to CNN, currently Clinton is leading with 1,148 delegates with Obama trailing with 1,121.
Meanwhile, former Arkansas governor Huckabee surprised many for his win Saturday by beating John McCain in not only Louisiana but Kansas also.
“This weekend Huckabee made a little noise particularly in Louisiana,” said Samuels.
According to Samuels, if McCain losses in Virginia then momentum for him might be lost which will be surprising after his domination during Super Tuesday.
Huckabee, who CNN reports is trailing behind with 217 to McCain’s 723 has gained support from the evangelical right.
Sophomore elementary education major from Plaquemine Kacy Scarsone was satisfied with Huckabee’s win.
“I was very happy with Huckabee,” said Scarsone. “I agree with his moral issues and that’s what I look for in a president.”
Costing the state $5 million, the closed election left 22 percent of voters who weren’t affiliated with either party according to reports because only officially registered Democrats and Republicans could cast ballots.
