(SWAC) -The Southern women’s team bounced back from defeat on Monday night to defeat Mississippi Valley State in Baton Rouge.
Both teams shot poorly in the first half, with The Devilettes shooting just 23.3 percent from the field and Southern shooting 29.2 percent. The Jaguars found themselves holding a slim 24-20 halftime lead, despite the poor offensive effort.
In the second half, Southern took control of the game and led by as much as 15 points with 13:15 left in the game. Mississippi Valley State chipped away at the Jaguars’ lead, but couldn’t overcome it.
Deidra Jackson led the Jaguars with 20 points. Freda Allen scored nine points and grabbed 11 rebounds.
Shakira Arnold and Latoia Mackey led the Devilettes with 11 points each. Jessica Williams followed with eight point and 11 rebounds.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
After finding themselves down 27-29 at intermission, the Delta Devils were about to score 25 second-points to down Southern 52-51 Monday night at the F.G. Clark Activity Center in Baton Rouge.
After two Steffon Wiley free throws gave Southern the lead at 50-47 with just under three minutes remaining, MVSU got a game-tying three-pointer from Chris Watson and a Watson tip-in off a missed shot to take the lead with 24 seconds remaining in regulation.
