The United States Army will conclude its presentation of HEROES AMONG US, a black history photo exhibit honoring black soldiers and pioneers, on Friday, Feb. 22 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Southern University Museum of Arts (SUMA).
The exhibit began Wednesday, Feb. 20. The compelling black and white photo display chronicles the history of black soldiers’ service in the U.S. Army and also showcases legendary blacks’ civil rights, entertainment, sports and education history makers. The HEROES AMONG US exhibit kicked off Black History Month in Columbia, stopped in Baltimore and will conclude in Atlanta. Admission to the exhibit is free to the public.
“The United States Army joins the nation in celebrating Black History Month and is proud to present the HEROES AMONG US photo exhibit to honor African-American soldiers, past and present, whose service in the Army has made a difference in the lives of our families, our communities and our nation, ” said Lieutenant Colonel Shirley Sutton, professor of military science, Southern University Army ROTC. Sutton continues, “The Army is proud of our historic commitment to diversity and the important contributions of African-American soldiers.”
The exhibit features a unique collection of photo images of black soldiers selected from various museums, newspapers and government archives, some of whom are widely recognized and others that are virtually unknown.
