In her newly inaugurated position of vice president of the Student Government Association, junior Stasha Rhodes held a special senate session last Tuesday night in the Henton conference room of the Smith-Brown Memorial Student Union.
The first order of business was the motion to move a bill by the finance committee that gave $500 dollars to five campus organizations that included Collegiate 100 Men, Navy ROTC, Jimbawe Dancers, International Denominational Gospel Choir and Beta Kappa Psi Fraternity.
The Senate’s inability to hold a senate meeting in quorum, which prevented many different campus organizations from asking for funding, was the reason for the bill to be pushed, according to Rhodes.
“It’s always good that we give a helping hand to organizations who try to help the university,” said Rhodes.
Also discussed during the session was the student human resources committee presentation of an evaluation form for their “Mystery Shopper” project. The project involves senators going to individual departments where faculty will be graded on efficiency and attitude.
The community service committee also announced to the Senate, opportunities for them to fulfill their community service requirements such as volunteering for the Habitat for Humanity and American Cancer Association.
Final business included Rhodes announcing junior senator Sasha Steib, who was unable to attend the meeting due to class, as president pro tempore, Rhodes’ former position. Senior electrical engineering major from Plano, Texas Beryl Davis was announced secretary of senate, Steib’s former position.
After the meeting was adjourned, Rhodes was satisfied with the results of the meeting and the progress the Senate made.
“This meeting was outstanding and necessary.” said Rhodes. “Senate was enthusiastic that they had the opportunity to bring things to the table.”
