Southern’s weekend series with Western Division foe Prairie View was a long one, but proved to be a successful outing as the Jaguars took two of three games from the Panthers.
Southern (10-10, 8-4 Western Division) now sits in sole possession of first place in the division as PV (13-15, 7-5) trails from second.
Southern swept both seven inning games Saturday as pitcher Theo Ycoy got his first win, going 1 1/3 innings as the Jaguars rallied for a 6-3 win over Prairie View at Lee-Hines Field.
Then, in the second game, pitcher Cody Elliott earned his first save by pitching a scoreless seventh in a 4-2 victory.
“We finally won an ugly game,” saidSouthern’s head baseball coach Roger Cador. “You need to win an ugly game here and there. It’s a confidence-builder, in my opinion. “We made more errors than hits and we came out on top by two runs. That’s not going to happen many times.”
Sunday, PV shook back ending its 3-15 losing skid (including two to Southern on Saturday), getting a much needed win, 6-2 as senior pitcher Wrandal Taylor struck out six Jaguar batters in a complete game effort.
Southern had chances to take over the game, and even got eight hits, but only once got a leadoff man on base.
“We never put anything together,” said Cador. “Taylor had us baffled and guys started guessing. That created a problem for us.”
Southern takes the field Tuesday against LSU at Lee-Hines Field. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
