The Southern University softball team will play Texas Southern University on ESPNU on Friday, April 4 in Houston.
This will be the first time that the SU softball team, which is the four-time defending Western Division Southwestern Athletic Conference champion, has played on any of the ESPN networks.
Southern has played on Cox Sports Television in both live and tape-delayed games, but never one of this magnitude.
“We’re no stranger to television games, but we’ve also never played a game on ESPN before,” said Nancy Marshall, softball head coach. “It’s going to be a big game for us. I’m excited. The players are excited. And, we’re ready to go out and compete.”
Southern (17-13, 6-2) leads the SWAC Western Division. TSU (7-14, 5-6) is third behind Grambling State.
This series is vital to Southern as reeling Grambling (9-20, 5-2) trails by a single game headed into the last month of conference play.
The Jaguars last outing saw Southern swept by in-state rival McNeese State, 4-1 and 3-2. but, Marshall insists her team is refocused.
“I don’t think the sweep by McNeese will affect us going into the last month of conference play,” said Marshall. “Our girls are refocused and ready to make a run at another divisional championship. Our goal now is to win our remaining conference games.”
That quest begins Saturday in game one of three as Southern takes on TSU live at Memorial Field Park in Houston. Saturday’s game is set for 2 p.m. Game one of Sunday’s doubleheader is set for noon with game two at 2 p.m.
The game can be seen locally on Cox digital cable channel 243 or on Direct TV channel 609.
NOTES
Southern will step out of conference to sandwich in games with Nicholls State and Southeastern between a Western Division weekend series showdown with Grambling State. Southern hosts last place Arkansas-Pine Bluff in its last home series of the season April 18-19.
