Currently, Southern University’s softball team (8-6, 1-0 Southwestern Athletic Conference) will play a double header against Alcorn State University today at 1 p.m., the first home game of the season. So far, Southern has played in three tournaments:
HBCU Classic (2-2) Feb. 9-10Starting off the season, Southern defeated the Florida A&M Rattlers 3-2. The Lady Jaguars then fell to Hampton University 6-8 and came back to defeat Norfolk State 3-1, only to lose against North Carolina A&T 1-7 in Southern’s final appearance in the tournament.
Southeastern Tourney (3-2) Feb. 15-16Southeastern defeated Southern 2-10 in the first game of the tournament after playing only four innings. Southern bounced back with a three game winning streak, starting with the first shutout of the season. The Lady Jaguars stomped Jackson State 8-0 in their first conference game and then moved on to defeat Mississippi Valley 5-1 and Tennessee-Martin 9-7. Ending their three game winning streak, Southern suffered a 0-2 loss against Alcorn State.
McNeese State Tourn. (3-2) Feb. 22-24The Lady Jaguars fell 3-5 against Houston Baptist and then suffered a loss to McNeese State 2-8. Not phased, the Lady Jaguars followed up with three consecutive wins, defeating Houston Baptist 6-2, McNeese State 10-9 and Texas Southern 4-1.
